Automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and automated guided vehicle systems (AGVSs) play a major role in increasing the flexibility of production and logistics processes. Used individually or in groups, these mobile helpers are the technical pioneers of cyber-physical production systems in the Industry 4.0 and Smart Factory framework – with the AGVs driving and working autonomously and AGVSs serving as self-organizing and self-optimizing units.   Continue reading

Automation with robots

Safety without the need for protective fences

desma_teaser

With the help of safety laser scanners from the microScan3 product family as well as a Flexi Soft safety controller, DESMA guarantees the safe operation of a robot on an injection molding machine. The electro-sensitive protective devices allow ergonomic access to the machine for the purposes of process-orientated material staging and removal. The robot automatically picks up the raw material provided as soon as the safety perimeter is clear and dispenses the processed silicone and rubber parts. At the same time, the safety laser scanners are especially economical on space and therefore do not impede the process. Continue reading

SAFETY EXPERTISE + AUTOMATION KNOW-HOW = FLEXIBLE MANUFACTURING

Customized solutions for flexible production

MRK_teaser

Flexibility and productivity are major trends in the field of industrial automation. However, increasing one needn’t mean decreasing the other. There are already some initial approaches, such as flexible production cells and systems, which can help you strike the right balance. These pose new challenges for functional safety if a person interacts directly with the automated environment. To ensure that this does not lead to bottlenecks when implementing this “flexible manufacturing” solution, linking in automation and safety expertise is essential. Continue reading

PSDI function in presses

The simple, safe way to increase productivity

SICK_PSDI_250x167_WEB

Thanks to the PSDI (Presence Sensing Device Initiation) function in the Flexi Soft safety controller, it is possible to control the press cycle in manual insertion presses using a type 4 safety light curtain in PSDI mode. As soon as the worker removes his or her hand from the hazardous point, the press automatically restarts. Not only does this remove the need for two-hand control devices, it also offers clear benefits when it comes to providing workers with ergonomic, safe workstations – and ensures that more of the machine capacity is utilized. Residual stack monitoring with Safeguard Detector

Carton magazine: Making rigid housings a thing of the past

Safeguard_Setector

Requirements for protecting machinery have changed more and more with the increasing use of automation. In the past, protective devices in the work process were something of a nuisance; for this reason, they were often not used at all. Innovative technology has enabled protective devices to be integrated into the work process. As a result, they are no longer an obstacle for the operator and even help productivity in many cases. Reliable protective devices that are integrated into the workplace have thus become indispensable nowadays. They are a useful tool in achieving the goal of continuous production, which in turn improves system efficiency. Continue reading
